I'm a freelance journalist in Oregon writing for national newspapers and outlets in the U.S. West. I specialize in features, solutions journalism and hard looks at social policy. Editors: I'm available for hire.
I cut my teeth at Denver's alt-weekly Westword, where I wrote features about street racing and hardline vegan activism. From 2018 to 2021, I was a staff reporter at the Aurora Sentinel/Sentinel Colorado, the paper of record for a massive Denver suburb experiencing rapid growth, displacement, violence and police brutality. I was given wide latitude to conduct investigations. I won two first-place Colorado Press Association awards in 2019 for my work documenting a leaking Superfund site and a private consulting firm running failing schools in impoverished neighborhoods. I also wrote what is perhaps the only posthumous profile of Elijah McClain, an innocent man whom police and paramedics killed in 2018.
Since then, I worked for national and local outlets in Colorado and Oregon. I am a recurring temporary staff reporter for The Oregonian's Politics team, where I covered six races for Congress in 2022 and Oregon's 2023 legislative session. I'm a regular contributor to the A1 section of the paper, otherwise known as the front page. I report dispatches for The Washington Post. I also worked as an investigator on a high-profile murder case in Oregon.
Drop me a line.
